Clean Air Zone: Purpose & Benefits
In a move to ensure cleaner urban air, UK cities are introducing Clean Air Zones (CAZ). The objective is to improve air quality by reducing the number of highly polluting vehicles entering city centres—without outright bans. Non-compliant vehicles are required to pay a daily fee to discourage frequent use in these areas.
What is a Clean Air Zone?
A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is a designated area where targeted measures are in place to reduce harmful emissions from vehicles. The emphasis is on influencing driver behaviour through charges, rather than blanket restrictions or bans.
How it Works
The CAZ operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Clearly marked signage informs drivers both before entry and at the zone boundary, ensuring they are aware when entering a controlled area.
CAZ Signage
To ensure drivers are well informed, two types of signage are used: advance notification signs on approach routes, and clear boundary signs marking the exact entry into the CAZ.
Payment & Fees
Non-compliant vehicles must pay a daily fee to enter the zone, which can be paid online or via phone. Payments can be made up to 6 days prior to travel, on the day, or up to 6 days afterward, providing convenience and flexibility for drivers.
